When PawsWatch volunteers Chad Nelson, 36, and Jerry Pepka, 67, set the TNR trap for a small tuxedo cat they called “Fluffy,” they had no idea several days later they would be reuniting her with her family after being lost for a year.

As it happened, the cat, “Lucy,” who was initially taken to an area clinic for a health check and neutering, had a microchip. While the phone number associated with it was no longer in service, the email worked. Seems Lucy had only been living one street over with a feral cat colony from where she had escaped the Ragan home a year prior when the dogs were being let out into the yard. The family had posted signs, but with no luck locating Lucy. It was their first cat, having adopted her from Providence Animal Rescue League.

“It’s been so long,” Tiffany Ragan told The Providence Journal. “I was so afraid (Lucy was gone).”

“She purred at me,” 5 year-old Nolan shared with his mom, although older brother, 8 year-old Payton said, “She’s not as feisty as she used to be.”

Evidence, once again, that microchipping works.
