San Diego Comes Together to Help Pets In Need

On Saturday, December 8, the ASPCA joined forces with California State Assemblymember Brian Maienschein and local humane organizations to bring a little cheer to San Diego’s animals by hosting the Fifth Annual Adoption Event and Donation Drive for Homeless Animals at Kahoots, a pet-supply store in nearby Poway, California.

The weeklong event urged community members to help make a difference for animals by donating much-needed supplies such as blankets, dog and cat food, medicine, leashes and collars to support PAWS San Diego, a program of the San Diego Humane Society that provides essential pet services to low-income families and veterans. But that’s not all: Event-goers also got the chance to cozy up to adorable, adoptable pets who were on site, courtesy of the San Diego Humane Society.

Keeping pets and people together is a top priority for the ASPCA. Local community drives that uplift and enable others to be great pet owners are just one example of how small acts of kindness and support can achieve great outcomes for animals. By the end of the week, PAWS San Diego had received donations from dozens of community members and local vendors.

California’s animals have a lot to be grateful for this year—2018 saw the passage of several pieces of crucial animal-protection legislation, including laws to help protect California’s kittens and puppies from deadly diseases, allow veterinarians to obtain classroom credits by providing free services to low-income communities, and the overwhelming passage of Prop 12 on the November ballot, which will upgrade welfare standards for farm animals.

We want to thank our California advocates who joined us to make the event a wonderful success! We are humbled by the generous support of the community to provide for animals in need.
